First Post: Hello, my name is Alice, I am now 19 years and about to start university, I have decided to start a blog in the hopes that it will help other solo travellers (specifically female ones) to bite the bullet and just go travelling, when I decided to go solo travelling blogs like this one really helped me gain the confidence and knowledge I needed, and I hope it can do the same for anybody that might stumble across it.
I was 17 years old when I decided to take a Gap year, I didn’t know what I wanted to do after sixth form, so thought the best bet would be to take a year off and decide what exactly it is I want to do, whether it be going to University or getting a job. Now originally I was going to just stay at home for my gap year, get a part time job and just recuperate after being in education for the past 14 or so years. When I told people i.e. friends and family of my intentions they seemed surprised, they couldn’t understand A. why I didn’t just go to Uni and or B. why I didn’t go travelling. To that I just told them “well I have no one to go with as all of my friends are either working now, or at university” so it seemed out of the question.
Until… I woke up one morning and had a complete change of heart, I thought to myself “why can’t you just go? why let the fact that you’ll be on your own stop you!” and so my first step was to of course Google “travelling alone” and “solo female traveller” I was immediately flooded with thousands of results, and the general consensus was “you should do it, its so rewarding, you will grow as a person and become more independent” now of course there where some negatives thrown into this bunch the main one being loneliness, which to be honest I wasn’t worried too much about as in general I am quite happy in my own company. So now I had all of this information it was time to set the wheels in motion, the first being to tell my parents, I expected them to be worried, but I couldn’t believe how supportive they where of the idea, they gave me some destination ideas and even helped me to book some of the more complicated trips; then all that was left was to tell my friends, this wasn’t very difficult a lot of them where fairly surprised and happy for me, and if they where totally honest probably thought I wouldn’t do it, which I can understand completely.
Sixth form was almost over and I was starting to think of places to go, I was overwhelmed by all the places I wanted to visit and especially by the prices haha, granted I could have kept the cost down by staying in cheaper accommodation like hostels, but I like to have a comfortable bed and my own bathroom as well as other luxuries, its who I am and I’m not going to apologise for it. With Sixth form now drawing to a close it was time to move onto the next stage of my life, while most of my friends where starting university and all of the partying and work that goes along with it, I was picking out hotel rooms and what size suitcase I should take to Istanbul and other destinations.
